The day after a long holiday weekend, that feeling of remorse sets in after indulging in one too many glasses of Frose while desperately trying to hold on to the unofficial end of summer (even though we trick ourselves to believe it’s ending when it actually ends on September 22).
We pledge to ourselves that we will clean up our act a little and maybe drink a little less, eat out less and try to eat clean because after all our bodies crave it and is a temple that shouldn’t be neglected. So what better way to nourish ourselves is with a detox smoothie, I know what you’re thinking, “that’s so 2010” but you know what isn’t? Functional Foods. AKA any food that promotes optimal and positive health beyond basic nutrition and a smoothie is the perfect way to trick your brain into consuming this body loving foods.
Over the last few weeks I decided to use my boyfriend and me as a guinea-pigs and blended up a number of these healthy elixirs to find out which ones to share with you (without feeling like you just munched on a bouquet of grass). So in light of beginning the unofficial end of summer(UGH I know!), we are sharing some of our favorite and tasty detox smoothies.
Detox Dynomite Smoothie – SimplyRecipes
- 1 cup raw coconut water or filtered water, plus more as needed
- 1 medium green apple, skin on, cored and diced
- 1 small raw red beet, peeled and diced (grated for conventional blenders)
- 1 cup frozen strawberries
- 1 cup frozen pineapple
- 1/2 small avocado, pitted and peeled
- 1 cup baby spinach
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- Pinch of cayenne pepper
- Blend all Ingredients
I was very eager to try this smoothie, using a number of top Functional Foods (ie, beets, cayenne) and most of my favorite fruits. I will say the idea of adding beets made me nervous since I am not a fan (but figured it would suck it up). Once blended, the color was exactly what I expected it to be (due to the the beats and strawberries) and the texture was thick and almost creamy (thanks to the avocado). At first taste it is fruity but quickly comes an ‘earthy’ flavor of beets. M loved it, although he is a fan of beets so didn’t mind the taste.
Sunrise Detox Smoothie – Amy In the Kitchen
- 1 frozen banana
- 1/2 cup frozen mango
- 1/2 cup pineapple
- 1/2 cup frozen raspberries
- 1 cup coconut water
- juice of one lemon
OK, this one is by far my favorite with a sweet summer-y flavor. Not overly sweet, a hint of sour from the raspberries and lemon, very refreshing. All that was missing was a beach and a steel drums band (or alcohol as M pointed out). The consensus is the Sunrise Smoothie is the perfect intro smoothie to get your detox started.
The Dr. Is In – Frances Largeman-Roth, RD
- 1 cup coconut milk
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1 cup baby kale
- 1/2 cup watercress
- 1 cup green grapes
- 1 medium banana
- 0.5 lemon, squeezed
By looks, this smoothie is very unassuming. You think it might taste ‘grassy’ from the kale, watercress and turmeric (functional food) but in fact the fruits overpower those ingredients making it a light, smooth & fruity drink. This was M’s favorite one.
Blueberry Blackberry Kale Smoothie Life Made Sweeter
- 1/2 cup water or coconut water
- 1/2 cup kale
- 4-5 fresh blackberries
- 2 cups frozen blueberries
- 1 cup frozen pineapple chunk
If you are a berry lover, this smoothie is for you. It is bursting with flavor from the blueberries and blackberries (we threw in a few raspberries too). The kale is disguised by the fruit you don’t even realize it there. It is the perfect combination between sweet and tart. This was a close runner up for us both.
There are SO many detox smoothies it can be overwhelming to choose. My suggestion is to find ones with fruits and/or veggies that you like, but also venture out with one that has an ingredient that is new to you. You might be pleasantly surprised, and if not at least your body will thank you. If you do try a detox smoothie on your own share which ones you like!
